(Being Yourself Without Being Unfiltered)
Authenticity has become one of the most misused words in leadership.
People hear “authentic” and think it means saying whatever they feel, however they feel it, whenever they feel it.
But that’s not authenticity
that’s impulsiveness.
Authenticity is not about exposure.
Authenticity is about alignment.
When I stepped into corporate spaces especially banking I felt a very real tension:
How do I stay true to who I am my roots, my faith, my story while also honoring the expectations of an organization?
How do I lead with presence and personality without letting my personality overshadow the mission?
How do I maintain my identity without confusing the identity of the institution?
It took me years to understand something simple but difficult:
Authenticity is not about being fully exposed. It’s about being fully grounded.
Here’s what I learned along the way:
1. Authenticity requires emotional maturity.
Just because you feel something doesn’t mean it needs to be said.
Just because something is true doesn’t mean it’s helpful right now.
Authenticity without maturity becomes chaos.
Leaders must discern timing, tone, and context.
That’s not being “fake.”
That’s being effective.
2. You can share your story without sharing your whole self.
I lead from my scars
but I don’t bleed on people.
Sharing what shaped you is powerful.
Oversharing your wounds is irresponsible.
Leaders must calibrate disclosure.
Transparency must serve the mission, not your emotion.
3. Strong leaders integrate themselves into the culture they don’t bulldoze it.
You don’t have to choose between fitting in and standing out.
You can do both.
You can honor the institution and still bring your distinctiveness.
Leadership is influence, not invasion.
Your role isn’t to replace the culture
it’s to elevate it.
4. Authenticity doesn’t mean you never adjust.
Every environment requires calibration.
Every culture has its rhythm.
Authenticity is not rigidity.
Authenticity is being anchored enough to adapt without betraying who you are.
Adaptation is a leadership skill not a compromise of identity.
"Where have you traded authenticity for approval or used authenticity as a shield for avoidance?"
