Not too long ago, I was filming what will become a commercial. It was my third or fourth time doing this over the last seven years or so, but this time was different.
This time, I paid more attention to the production itself—the behind-the-scenes work.
There were probably 7-10 people involved, and every single one of them had a clearly defined role. Watching it all unfold was fascinating. No confusion. No overlap. No one trying to do someone else’s job. Everyone operating in their lane so the project could come to life.
What stood out to me wasn’t just the discipline of staying in your lane—but the understanding that your lane is connected to the whole. Each role mattered. Each function contributed. And if someone didn’t show up or didn’t do their part, the entire production would suffer.
It felt like a quiet but powerful lesson about life.
We’re all members of society with specific assignments. We serve distinct functions. But none of us operate in isolation. We’re connected to something bigger than ourselves, and the health of the whole depends on each of us honoring our role.
Knowing your assignment—and faithfully carrying it out—isn’t small work. It’s how the whole moves forward.
