(Because People Trust What They Can Predict, Not What You Promise)
You can’t shortcut trust, but you can accelerate it.
And in leadership especially when you’re new, when you’re stepping into an industry that doesn’t know you, or when you’re following a leader people loved you must accelerate it.
When I stepped into Midwest BankCentre, I knew people were watching me long before they were listening to me. They weren’t evaluating my speeches or my strategy decks. They were evaluating my patterns.
See, trust isn’t built over time.
Trust is built over truth.
Time just reveals which truth you operate from.
Most leaders get this wrong. They think trust is about being liked or being charismatic or being impressive on day one. But trust is far more practical than that.
People trust what they can predict.
Let me break down what experience taught me:
1. Trust starts with consistency, not connection.
Connection makes people open their ears.
Consistency makes people open their guard.
If people can predict your behavior your presence, your follow-through, your integrity trust begins to form even before the relationship does.
2. Trust grows when you tell the truth early and often.
In my first ninety days as CEO, people didn’t need perfection from me. They needed the truth.
They needed to hear:
“Here’s what I know.”
“Here’s what I don’t know.”
“Here’s what I’m learning.”
Truth creates safety.
And safety creates speed.
3. Trust expands when you follow through on the small things.
People don’t lose trust because of one big failure. They lose it through a hundred small inconsistencies.
If you say you’ll call, call.
If you say you’ll check, check.
If you say you’ll decide, decide.
Leadership is often the quiet art of keeping small promises with large consequences.
4. Your steadiness is your credibility.
Teams watch how you respond to pressure, conflict, and ambiguity.
They’re not just learning what you’ll do they’re learning who you are.
They’re learning whether you can carry weight without dropping it on them.
People don’t trust leaders who can’t carry their own emotions.
- Here’s your Reframe: Trust is not a feeling; trust is a pattern.
- Here’s your Reclaim: You don’t need decades to build trust you need disciplined integrity.
- Here’s your Rename: You’re not “building trust.” You’re establishing reliability.
"What simple behavior done consistently would immediately increase your credibility this week?"
